Midnight Wine^® Weigela florida

Bought 3 for the leaf color to add dark contrast in the garden. Gets 6 hours of sun. Very disappointing mostly green with dark hues. Last year to see if converts darker, if not will replace.

I planted five of these in the front of my border in full sun and clay soil. They are slow to start in the spring so you will need to be patient. I bought these shrubs specifically for their low compact growth habit and dark foliage rather than flowers. These plants are not prolific bloomers in fact they have very few flowers which meets my needs and expectations. The foliage is very dark and can get lost in dark colored mulch. However I use them as an anchor accent plant in a bed devoted mostly to annuals. This year I surrounded them with Peachykeen Superbena, Snow princess alyssum, and butterfly blue pin cushion flowers and the combination has exceeded my expectations.

This plant looks it's best late summer, early fall. I've had it for 3 years and it has never flowered but it's small compact size and bright red folliage in early fall make it worth keeping. When I purchased this compact Midnight Wine, I also purchased 3 My Monet weiglia plants and I couldn't be more pleased with them. The My Monet have exceeded my expections, pretty bright pink flowers in the spring and the beautiful cream, green and pink folliage all summer long is just outstanding.
